How To Turn Off Instagram Account Suggestions?
Instagram's Show account suggestions on profiles setting: how to turn it off in a browser, what it changes and what it doesn't.
Short answer: the setting is Show account suggestions on profiles, under Edit profile on instagram.com. When someone follows you, Instagram can show them similar profiles they might also want to follow. Turning the setting off stops those suggestions appearing on your profile, and your profile also stops appearing as a suggestion on other people's profiles. Instagram says the option is only available in a browser, on a computer or a phone.
Two kinds of suggestions
- Your profile being suggested to other people. This is the setting covered here: the suggestions shown on your profile when someone follows you, and your profile appearing in the suggestions on other people's profiles.
- What Instagram suggests to you. The accounts, posts and Reels recommended to you in your own Feed, Reels and Explore are not part of this setting. Its help article covers only the suggestions shown on profiles. The last section covers the separate reset Meta announced for content recommendations.
How to turn off account suggestions on your profile
On a computer, at instagram.com:
- Click your profile picture on the left to go to your profile.
- Click Edit profile.
- Turn off Show account suggestions on profiles, then click Submit.
On a phone, at instagram.com in your mobile browser:
- Tap your profile picture at the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Turn off Show account suggestions on profiles, then tap Submit.
What the setting doesn't do
Instagram's help article describes the setting only in terms of those profile suggestions. It doesn't say the setting hides your account from search, changes who can see your profile or posts, or changes what Instagram recommends to you.
Suggestions in your Feed, Reels and Explore
What Instagram recommends to you has a different control. In November 2024 Meta announced that it was testing a way for everyone on Instagram, including teens, to reset the content recommendations they see in Explore, Reels and Feed: clear them and start fresh, after which recommendations personalize again over time based on what you interact with. The announcement said the feature would soon roll out globally, and it gives the in-app steps as they were at the time.
