Social media glossary
Plain-English definitions for the terms creators and marketers hear most across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter / X and LinkedIn — from algorithm basics to platform-specific jargon like FYP and YPP.
A
What Is A/B Testing?
A/B testing means publishing two versions of a post, thumbnail or caption to see which performs better, then keeping the winner. Creators use it to test hooks, posting times and thumbnails; the “B” version only needs one variable changed to give a clean read on what actually moved the number.
What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is earning a commission for driving sales through a unique tracked link or code. Creators post the link in a bio, story swipe-up or video description; the brand pays out a percentage of whatever purchases that link generates.
What Is the Algorithm?
The algorithm is the ranking system each platform uses to decide whose posts show up in whose feed, and in what order. It weighs signals like watch time, likes, comments, shares and how quickly a post gets engagement after posting — not a single formula, and each platform's weighting is different and changes over time.
B
What Is a Bio Link?
A bio link is the single clickable URL a profile is allowed in its bio — the only tappable link on most platforms outside of ads. Creators use link-in-bio tools to point that one URL at a small landing page of several destinations (store, latest video, other platforms) instead of just one.
What Is a Bot Account?
A bot account is an automated or fake profile with no real person behind it, usually created in bulk to inflate follower counts cheaply. Platforms periodically purge them, which is why bot-heavy follower packages can visibly drop after a purge — real, active accounts don't.
What Is a Brand Deal?
A brand deal (or sponsorship) is a paid partnership where a creator promotes a product or service in exchange for payment, free product, or both. Rates typically scale with an account's engagement rate and audience size, not follower count alone — which is why a smaller, highly engaged account can out-earn a bigger, quieter one.
C
What Is a Carousel Post?
A carousel is a multi-image or multi-video post a viewer swipes through, most associated with Instagram. Carousels tend to hold attention longer than a single image, since a swipe itself counts as an engagement signal to the algorithm.
What Is Community Management?
Community management is the ongoing work of replying to comments and DMs, moderating a following, and keeping an audience engaged between posts. It's distinct from content creation — a well-managed community engages faster and more often, which itself feeds the algorithm signals that decide reach.
What's the Difference Between a Connection and a Follower on LinkedIn?
A LinkedIn connection is a mutual, accepted relationship (capped at 30,000), while a follower is one-directional — anyone can follow a profile without it accepting. Connections see more of your posts in-feed by default; followers are the audience a Creator Mode profile reaches beyond its direct network.
Buy LinkedIn Connections →What Is a Content Pillar?
A content pillar is one of a handful of recurring themes a creator or brand builds posts around (for example: tutorials, behind-the-scenes, and product features). Sticking to 3-5 pillars keeps a feed recognizable and gives an algorithm a clear signal about who to show the account to.
What Is CPC?
CPC is what an advertiser pays each time someone clicks their ad, calculated as total ad spend divided by clicks. Outside of ads, CPC also shows up as a keyword-research metric describing how competitive (and expensive) a search term is to target.
What Is CPM?
CPM is the cost of 1,000 ad impressions — "mille" is Latin for thousand. It's the standard way ad platforms and YouTube's ad revenue are priced, so a channel's earnings from ads scale with both its view count and the CPM rate advertisers are paying in that niche and country.
YouTube Money Calculator →What Is a Creator Fund?
A creator fund is a platform-run pool of money paid out to creators based on video performance, separate from brand deals or ad revenue share. TikTok's program has evolved (from the original Creator Fund to the Creativity Program), and payouts vary widely by views, region and video length — it's rarely a creator's main income source on its own.
TikTok Money Calculator →What Is Cross-Posting?
Cross-posting is publishing the same piece of content (often a short-form video) across multiple platforms — TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, typically. It's an efficient way to test how a single idea performs on different audiences, though some platforms' algorithms deprioritize content carrying another platform's watermark.
What Is CTR?
CTR is the percentage of people who saw something (an impression) and actually clicked or tapped it. On YouTube specifically, thumbnail and title CTR is one of the strongest signals for whether a video gets recommended further — a high CTR tells the algorithm the packaging is working.
D
What Is Drip-Feed Delivery?
Drip-feed delivery means an order (of followers, likes or views) lands gradually over minutes or hours instead of arriving all at once. It mimics how genuine engagement actually accumulates and is the standard, safer delivery pattern for any growth service — an instant bulk dump is the more suspicious pattern.
Refund policy →What Is a TikTok Duet?
A Duet is a TikTok format that plays a creator's reaction video side-by-side with the original clip. It's a common way smaller creators get discovered by duetting a viral video, since the original's audience can see the reaction alongside it.
E
What Is an Engagement Pod?
An engagement pod is a private group of creators who agree to like and comment on each other's posts within minutes of publishing, to simulate an early engagement spike. Pods are a manual, human version of what drip-fed engagement services provide automatically — several platforms actively try to detect and discount pod-driven activity.
What Is Engagement Rate?
Engagement rate is the percentage of an audience that actively interacts (likes, comments, shares, saves) with a post, usually calculated as engagements divided by followers or by reach. A good rate varies a lot by platform and audience size — a smaller, niche account often posts a much higher rate than a huge, broad one — which is why it's a better trust signal than raw follower count.
Engagement Rate Calculator →What Is the Instagram Explore Page?
The Explore page is Instagram's personalized discovery feed of content from accounts a user doesn't yet follow, ranked by what the algorithm predicts they'll engage with. Landing on Explore is one of the main ways an account is discovered by people outside its existing audience.
F
What Is Follow-for-Follow?
Follow-for-follow (F4F) is an informal arrangement where two accounts follow each other purely to inflate follower counts, with no real interest in each other's content. It pads the follower number but adds nothing to engagement rate, since neither side is actually interested — platforms and savvy viewers both discount it.
What Is FYP?
FYP stands for "For You Page" — TikTok's main personalized feed, built entirely from what its algorithm predicts a specific user wants to watch next, rather than who they follow. "Getting on the FYP" means a video is being actively pushed to people beyond the creator's own followers, which is how most TikTok virality happens.

What Is a Handle?
A handle is the unique @username identifying an account on a platform, distinct from its display name. Handles are first-come-first-served and often need creative variation (underscores, numbers, abbreviations) once the obvious version of a name is already taken.
Instagram Username Generator →What Is a Hashtag?
A hashtag is a keyword or phrase prefixed with # that groups posts under a searchable, browsable topic. Using a mix of broad and niche-specific hashtags — rather than only the highest-volume ones — tends to surface a post to a more relevant, more likely-to-engage audience.

What Are Impressions?
An impression is counted every time a post is displayed on someone's screen, whether or not they engage with it — and the same person seeing a post twice counts as two impressions. It's a raw visibility number, separate from reach (unique viewers) and separate from engagement (actual interactions).
What Are Impressions on Instagram?
On Instagram specifically, impressions are broken down by source in the post-insights panel — Home feed, Profile, Explore, Hashtags and so on — so a creator can see exactly where their visibility is coming from. A post with high impressions but a low engagement rate usually signals the content reached people, but didn't resonate with them.
Buy Instagram Views →What Is Influencer Marketing?
Influencer marketing is a brand paying (in cash, product or both) a creator with an established, trusted audience to promote a product to that audience. It works because the recommendation carries the creator's personal credibility — which is also why disclosure rules (like #ad) exist and why engagement rate matters more to brands than raw follower count.
N
What Is a Niche?
A niche is the specific topic or audience segment a creator consistently posts about — fitness, personal finance, cottagecore cooking — rather than general content for everyone. Staying in a defined niche makes an account easier for an algorithm to categorize and recommend to the right viewers.
O
What Is Organic Growth?
Organic growth is gaining followers and engagement purely through content and the platform's free discovery mechanisms — no ad spend involved. It's typically slower than paid growth but tends to produce a more engaged audience, since every follower found the content on their own.
R
What Is Reach?
Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a post at least once — as opposed to impressions, which count every view including repeats from the same person. A post can have high impressions but modest reach if it's mostly being re-shown to the same small group.
What Is Reach on Instagram?
Instagram's insights panel reports reach per post and per story, split by followers vs. non-followers — the non-follower share is a direct read on how well a post is traveling beyond an existing audience via Explore, hashtags and shares. A rising non-follower reach percentage over time is one of the clearest signs an account is actually growing its discovery, not just posting to the same people.
Buy Instagram Followers →What Are Instagram Reels?
Reels are Instagram's short-form vertical video format, Instagram's answer to TikTok, and currently the format Instagram's algorithm favors most heavily for reach into new audiences. A single Reel routinely reaches far more non-followers than a static photo post from the same account.
Buy Instagram Views →What Is a Refill Guarantee?
A refill guarantee is a growth-service policy promising to top an order back up for free if delivered followers, likes or views drop within a set window (commonly 30 days). It protects against natural platform churn and periodic bot purges — worth checking for before buying from any provider, since not every seller offers one.
Refund policy →What Is Audience Retention?
Audience retention (or watch-through rate) measures how much of a video people actually watch before dropping off, usually shown as a graph across the video's timeline. YouTube weights retention heavily in deciding what to recommend — a video that keeps people watching signals quality more directly than the view count alone.
What Is a Retweet?
A retweet (now often labeled "Repost" on X) shares someone else's post to your own followers' timeline, either as-is or with an added quote comment. Retweets extend a post's reach beyond its original audience and, unlike a like, actively distribute the content to new eyes.

What Is a Shadowban?
A shadowban is when a platform quietly limits how far an account's content spreads — hiding it from hashtag or Explore results, for instance — without ever notifying the account or removing anything outright. It's typically triggered by activity that looks automated or against community guidelines (aggressive following/unfollowing, banned hashtags, reported content), and the only real way to check is watching for an unexplained reach drop over time.
Instagram Shadowban Test →What Is an SMM Panel?
An SMM (social media marketing) panel is the backend platform growth-service providers use to fulfil orders — followers, likes, views and similar engagement — often sourced from a network of sub-providers rather than one single supplier. Panel quality varies enormously, which is the real driver behind why the same-looking "1,000 followers" product can be real and durable from one seller and bot-filled and short-lived from another.
What Is a TikTok Stitch?
A Stitch clips a few seconds from someone else's TikTok and uses it to open a new video, crediting the original creator automatically. It's commonly used for reaction, commentary or "answering" another creator's video, and — like a Duet — it's a real discovery channel for the original clip's creator.
What Are Instagram/Facebook Stories?
Stories are vertical, full-screen posts that disappear after 24 hours by default, shown in a dedicated bar above the main feed. Because they're temporary, Stories tend to carry more casual, behind-the-scenes content than a permanent feed post — and story views are a fast, low-friction engagement signal.
Buy Instagram Story Views →What Is a YouTube Subscriber?
A subscriber is someone who's opted in to see a channel's uploads in their subscription feed and get notified of new videos. Subscriber count is also the gate for YouTube's Partner Program — a channel needs 1,000 subscribers (plus either 4,000 public watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days) to apply for monetization.

What Is UGC?
UGC is content created by everyday users or customers rather than a brand's own marketing team — an unboxing video, a review, a fan photo. Brands increasingly favor UGC-style ads because it reads as more authentic than polished in-house creative, even when the “creator” was actually paid to make it.
V
What Are Vanity Metrics?
Vanity metrics are numbers that look impressive but don't reliably predict business outcomes — raw follower count is the classic example, since it says nothing about whether that audience actually engages, clicks, or buys. Engagement rate, click-through rate and conversion rate are generally considered more meaningful, harder-to-fake alternatives.
What Is a Verified Badge?
A verified badge (blue checkmark) signals a platform has confirmed an account's authenticity or, on some platforms today, that it's a paying subscriber to a verification product. The criteria and meaning differ by platform — Instagram and YouTube still gate it on notability/authenticity review, while X's checkmark is primarily a paid subscription.
W
What Is Watch Time?
Watch time is the total number of minutes viewers have spent watching a channel's videos, summed across every view. It's the metric YouTube's Partner Program threshold is built on (4,000 public hours in the trailing 12 months) and one of the strongest signals YouTube's algorithm uses when deciding what to recommend next.

What Is YPP?
YPP is YouTube's monetization program — the one that turns on ad revenue, channel memberships and other earning features. Eligibility requires 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in the past 90 days, on top of following YouTube's monetization policies.

What Is Social Proof?
Social proof is the psychological effect where people trust something more simply because other people already appear to trust it — a high follower count, visible engagement, or reviews all serve as social proof. On social platforms, a healthy-looking follower and engagement count on a new account can make the difference between a first-time visitor scrolling past and sticking around.
